Media Alert for Sunday 8 February 2009 at Outer Harbour

Sir James Hardy at the helm of One & All Youth Development Program Legendary Olympic Games, America’s Cup and Admiral’s Cup yachtsman and wine industry icon, Sir James Hardy, is “reporting for duty” aboard South Australia’s tall ship One & All.

Sir James today (Sunday) officially accepts the role as Patron of the One & All Youth Development Program, an adventure based learning program for students and young adults.
He and Lady Joan Hardy will be aboard One & All at Outer Harbour today with the Governor of South Australia, His Excellency Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce, to celebrate the annual Flotilla For Kids in support of children living with cancer.

The announcement of Sir James’ patronage of the Youth Development Program follows a $2 million refurbishment of One & All as an investment by the State Government to secure its long-term future as the flagship of South Australia.

Since the ship was launched in 1987, the One & All Youth Development Program has influenced the lives of more than 4,500 young South Australians through voyages where participants learn to work together in an isolated, unfamiliar and adventure-based environment.

Andrew Cannon, Chairman of SA Tall Ships Incorporated, which operates One & All, said the Youth Development Program was unique in South Australia as the only opportunity for young people to acquire new skills aboard a traditional sailing ship.

“One & All takes youth development to a completely new dimension bringing young people from all walks of life together to meet the challenging and ever-changing elements of the sea,” Mr Cannon said.

“The program is about personal development with enjoyment. It is not about teaching young people how to sail ships.  Rather, it is about providing trainees with opportunities to learn about themselves, and positive interaction with others through their on-board experiences.

“We are privileged to have Sir James, one of the world’s most renowned yachtsman and eminent business leaders, as Patron of the Youth Development program.

“His involvement with One & All goes back a long way as he was President of Jubilee 150 Ship Building Project involving a group of dedicated South Australians who worked so hard to have a traditional sail training ship built in South Australia.

“Ultimately, our objective is to develop a One & All Youth Development Foundation, with Sir James as Patron, to administer funds donated by businesses and individuals to broaden sea-going opportunities for young South Australians.

“South Australia has a rich maritime history with the ketch trade, and this continues today with submarine and destroyer projects based at Port Adelaide.

“It is important to continue engaging our youth in the maritime aspects of our community in a constructive way with the One & All.

“We also look forward to opportunities to involve the Falie, as the last surviving vessel of the South Australian ketch trade, as a wharfside part of our operations.”

Sir James said his involvement with One & All was “akin to going a full circle.”

“I was active with many others in the building process, and to now see the ship operating so successfully is very fulfilling,” Sir James said.

“The whole basis of the youth development program is to build independence, self-sufficiency and confidence among boys and girls, and young men and women.

“Adventure voyages aboard a ship such as One & All provide wonderful memories and experiences that can transform lives, and we would like to provide these opportunities to as many young people as possible.”

Sydney Heritage Fleet

Shipyard Artist Wanted

The Sydney Heritage Fleet is calling for applications for its first ever Artist in Residence Programme.

The successful applicant will be furnished with a studio on board the historic ferry Kanangra Rozelle.  The program is designed to promote the work of the Artist and to raise funds for Sydney Heritage Fleet.

“This new scheme, which we are running in association with the Australian Society of Marine Artist, is intended to capture the history and heritage of Sydney harbour”. Jon Simpson, General Manager Sydney Heritage Fleet.

The Sydney Heritage Fleet is a voluntary organisation, which relies heavily on its own fund raising efforts to maintain a unique fleet of 8 historic vessels five of whom are over 100 years old. The Fleet includes the tall ship James Craig, steam tug Waratah, steam launch Lady Hopetoun, Edwardian Yacht Boomerang and several others.

The Artist will spend three to four months at Museum sites, 3 days per week.  As a guide, the work should fall within the limits of representational impressionistic art.  The artist style should feature strong figure drawing skills in painting (oil, water colour and chalk).

The Museum will host an exhibition of the Artist’s completed works on board the Kanangra at the end of the residency.  The shipyard is a great place to work and explore and the historic ferry Kanangra offers an artist great lighting (see image of the Kanangra).

Interested artists should view the Artist in Residence Programme at www.shf.org.au. Applications close on Wednesday 5th March 2008.

Tall Ship ‘Races’ in Australia!

A frequent spectacle in European and American ports are a host of sailing ships at the end of a tall ship ‘race’.  Tall, graceful and beautiful examples of maritime heritage, they generate thousands of visitors to port cities, bringing a vibrancy and delight to all.

These tall ship ‘races’ are organised by Sail Training International and are usually limited to the Northern hemisphere.

The Australian Sail Training Association, the local affiliate of STI, has embarked upon an ambitious program to organise such events in Australia and to develop a national program of sail training opportunities for Australian citizens.

Commencing with the 13 Australian and New Zealand tall ships, AUSTA hopes to build regular events that will eventually attract some of the 200 plus sailing ships from around the world.

AUSTA is advertising for a Coordinator to plan and organise the tall ship events.

The position is voluntary, though it carries an honorarium of $20,000 per annum.

Details of this unique opportunity are on AUSTA’s website www.sailtrainingaustralia.com/
