The Australian Sail Training Association (AUSTA) is a voluntary organisation which aspires to:

  • promote, assist and support Australian/NZ 'Sail Training' Associations and tall ship operators in their endeavours;
  • be  recognised in Australia and New Zealand as the organisation providing knowledge in the field of 'Sail Training' and 'Sail Training' events;
  • be the organisation which leads and contributes most, nationally, to the development and promotion of 'Sail Training' for young people in Australia/NZ; and
  • be the organisation that sets the standards in organising races for 'Sail Training' tall ships.

The AUSTA Mission

To foster opportunities for young Australians and New Zealanders to discover their inner strengths and potential through a structured "Sail Training" experience of an adventure at sea in a tall ship.

What is Sail Training?

Sail training is an outdoor adventure activity for young people. Its purpose is not to teach young people how to sail. It is principally to help them learn about themselves, to discover hidden strengths and talents, to understand the value of others and of working as one of a team. It requires an individual to confront many demanding challenges, both physical and emotional. It is an activity that inspires and develops self-confidence and responsibility, an understanding and acceptance of others whatever their social or cultural background, and a willingness to take a calculated risk. For many it can be a life-changing experience.
